Car Accidents
What you should and should not do...
Many serious injuries may not show up right away. If you are injured, or think you may have been injured in an auto accident, you should immediately seek medical attention. You should also be sure to have the local police or highway patrol investigate the collision as soon as possible. If fault may be an issue, do not move your car unless not doing so will place you or other motorists in danger. Get as much information as possible from the other driver and witnesses. This includes the name, address, home and employer phone numbers, drivers’ license number and insurance information. This information is absolutely necessary if the police or highway patrol are unable to investigate the collision. It is also a good idea to take photographs of your damaged car from several angles.
Dealing with the other person's insurance company.
Many states have laws which require drivers to have liability insurance. Oklahoma and Arkansas require liability coverage of at least $25,000 to pay for injuries resulting from an automobile collision. However, the insurance company may not extend this liability coverage to you to pay for your medical bills, lost wages, car and other related damages unless and until you obtain a court judgment against the person that caused the accident. The liability insurer can simply ignore you if it so chooses. This explains why insurance companies often treat you poorly when you make a claim.
